Alberta Rural Entrepreneurs Stream
The Alberta Rural Entrepreneur Stream is designed for experienced entrepreneurs or Senior Managers who wish to establish a new OR buy an existing business in a rural Alberta community where total population is less than 100,000. It supports regional economic growth and diversification outside major urban centers i.e. outside of Calgary and Edmonton Census Metropolitan Areas. This stream targets entrepreneurs with the intention and ability to actively manage a business in Alberta’s rural areas.
Eligibility Requirements (Minimum):
- Exploratory Visit: Exploratory visit to Alberta to meet community representative, interview and assess business opportunities;
- Education: Minimum of high school equivalent to the Canadian standard (ECA);
- Language Proficiency: IELTS score 4.5 in listening and 4.0 in rest of the bands (CLB 04);
- Work Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience as an active business owner and minimum 4 years of experience as a senior manager within the past 10 years;
- Net worth: CAD $300,000. All assets must be candidate’s own personal holdings or spouse’s;
- Investment: Minimum CAD $100,000 from candidate’s own or spouse’s equity;
- Business establishment: At least 51% ownership for a new business. Business Partners must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents. 100% ownership for business succession;
- Job creation: Must create at least one full-time job for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (not including relatives);
- Interview: Required for Approval;
- Community Support Letter: Must have a Community Support Letter from a participating Rural Alberta community;
- Residency: Must reside in Alberta, manage day-to-day business operation at least 12 months.
Eligibility Requirements (Preferred, will increase your chances):
- Economic Benefit: Business succession;
- Age: 21-49;
- Spouse’s score: Your spouse has one of the following:
1. Completed at least one year of full time post-secondary education;
2. Score 4.0 in each band of IELTS (CLB 03) in the last 2 years.
- Adaptability: Relatives (father, step-father, mother, step-mother, child, step-child, sister, step-sister, brother, step-brother) in Alberta of candidate or spouse.
Application Process:
Step 1: Assessment of ILCB;
Step 2: Exploratory visit (in person or video conference) to Alberta and community meeting/interview;
Step 3: Business Proposal Summary & Community Support Letter;
Step 4: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI);
Step 5: Submit business application Package:
- Business Plan,
- Business Plan Evaluation Report,
- Qualified Service Provider Report;
Step 6: Interview (in person or web-based video conference);
Step 7: Business Performance Agreement, Business Application Approval Letter along with 205(a) Letter of Support;
Step 8: Submit Work Permit to IRCC (2 years work permit); Register IRCC’s Employee Portal as an employer (Employer Compliance Fee);
Step 9: After approval, move to Alberta to establish or take over the Business;
Step 10: Business progress report to AAIP in every six (6) months;
Step 11: Final report for Nomination (must actively own and operate the business in Alberta for at least 1 year (12 months);
Step 12: Receive Nomination by AAIP;
Step 13: Apply for PR application to IRCC.
